Still waiting for my Gmail theme

OK, I'm feeling left out--found out today from my colleague Morrigan Erinyes' Plurk update that the new Gmail theme setting has already been activated on her account. She's using the Desk theme.

Me? Nada. Zilch. You're supposed to get a Themes tab under Gmail's Settings. You can find out more about this new Gmail feature from this entry on the Official Gmail Blog. A number of users already have the new Themes tab, based on the Plurk responses that I've read.

Mobilizing online communities for your brand

Last week, from Nov. 10-14 at 10 am to 6 pm, our company launched an online project which we believe is something groundbreaking, for the Philippine market, at the very least.

Dubbed as Reliving LIVE: The LIVE 2008 Experience, this was an online show that combined video footage from our successful Level Up! LIVE 2008 online gaming event last month at the World Trade Center (over 20, 000 attendees at the actual event, with over 12, 000 unique readers following the action via the live blog and 55, 000 viewers from 27 countries watching the live video stream) with a live feed from our studio.

Tying all this together was our live blog which allowed people to chat with our guests, post comments, join polls, see photos, listen to music and watch clips (apart from the video stream). Through the live segments, viewers could watch our guests while chatting with them, request which songs our guests could sing or dance to (talk about instant gratification), watch a mini-concert, and join online promos.

Here's a photo of musical artist Diwa De Leon a.k.a. Master Diwa, an avid gamer and the grandson of one of the Philippines' national artists, who performed video game themes in our studio for the live video stream while cosplaying as a Ragnarok minstrel.

X'mas is a four-letter word

Nope, I'm not complaining about Christmas or acting all Scrooge or Grinch by using that as the title of my blog post. I love Christmas--I just don't like the way we sometimes get too caught up in the holiday rush, wondering what to give or to get that it's almost as if we're being pressured to be happy this Christmas.

Truth is, all we really need this Christmas is to be with our family and friends. Read more »

Social networks as support groups, social media as youth media

I apologize for my long absence, but it's been a stress-filled two weeks marked by both personal tragedy and public success.

When my wife was pregnant with our first child, our now six-year-old daughter Sam, I wrote a column piece for the online news site I was then working for, titled "Baby 1.0". I talked about the mix of excitement and anxiety that every first-time parent-to-be feels, and about how I imagined my child would grow up in a tech-driven world.

I was planning to write something, too, about my hopes for our second child, but sadly, on what was to be my wife's 14th week of pregnancy, we were shocked to find out during her appointment with her OB-Gyne that the doctor could no longer detect any heartbeat.

Thank God for the mobile Internet

Ask people what's the one gadget they can't live without--the one that would send them running back home in case they left it behind--and chances are their answer would be the same as mine: The mobile phone.

It's hard to imagine that not too long ago, a mobile phone was a novelty, and pagers ruled the roost (remember those days?). Cell phones have empowered us in ways we might now take for granted. The mobile phone has always been a trusty tool for me, then as a tech journalist, and now as the head of a multimedia department in one of the leading Philippine online gaming companies.
