Which HDMI A/V receiver to buy?

Sep 3, 2008

Question on Home Entertainment:

I presently own a Sony LCD TV, a Samsung DVD-R155 DVD recorder, Bose speaker systems of two varieties--AM5 and VCS-30. Could you please advise me regarding which HDMI A/V receiver is best suited for me?

You will probably need a new set of loudspeakers to go along with your new A/V receiver. You could recycle your Bose, but timbre matching will be an issue since they're from different series. Plus the AM5's passive woofer is not going to serve out enough oomph for deep bass for action-packed movies, too.

As for which brand of receiver to get, it all depends on your taste and preferences. For a rough guide, Marantz is renowned for music, Yamaha for movies courtesy of its cinema DSP functions and Denon a mix of both.
